This episode of Nomads will document renowned action sports filmmaker Johnny Decesare and his crew as they put the finishing touches on their groundbreaking action sports film, “The Windsurfing Movie”. A Nomads crew will join the production on the island of Maui, as Johnny and company attempt to negotiate the final and most technically demanding shoot of the movie, a big wave riding sequence shot from helicopters. In addition to coverage of this shoot, the show will utilize existing footage from earlier shoots combined with documentation of the final weeks of post production leading up to the film’s gala premiere in France. The end result: an episode that will paint a revealing portrait of the realities of making an action sports film.

In depth interviews with the filmmaker, his crew, the athletes, and other industry notables will be intercut with “in the moment” behind the scenes coverage and actual scenes from the movie to make this show truly dynamic. Perhaps the most compelling element of this concept is the access we will have to four of the most elite windsurfers on the planet. Kai Lenny, Levi Siver, Jason Polakow, and Robby Naish represent three decades of windsurfing royalty. Each has an interesting story to tell, and they will provide a dynamic perspective on how the sport has evolved from the early 80’s to where it is today.

Hookipa Beach, Maui, Hawaii has long been considered the ultimate big wave windsurfing arena. On any given day when conditions are right hundreds of colorful sails can be observed flying, flipping, and shredding the faces of the wind swept waves as they crash onto coral reefs just off the shore. The history of the sport has been written in the sands of this beach, and it is therefore appropriate that this story be told there. Johnny Decesare came into action sports via competitive mogul skiing. After a successful career skiing bumps, he decided to pick up a camera and try his hand at making movies. His production company Poor Boyz Productions has made many highly acclaimed ski films, including the 2005 ski movie of the year “War”.

Decesare is an avid surfer and windsurfer and brings an intimate knowledge of the sport to his project. In addition to being an accomplished and talented filmmaker, Johnny is a very likeable guy, and will make a great spokesperson for the show. Perhaps no other sport is as visually compelling and beautiful as windsurfing. Set amongst a backdrop of some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth, this story is a natural for High Definition production. The images will jump off of the screen and viewers will be swept away by the dramatic scenery and action packed sequences.
